The system, and why this is different

Dallas County public safety runs on the Iowa Statewide Interoperable Communications System (ISICS) — a P25 Phase II trunked radio network, monitored here from the Dallas County Simulcast site. A conventional analog scanner can't follow a trunked system, because agencies don't sit on a fixed frequency — the network assigns channels dynamically and organizes traffic into talkgroups. NCISS decodes the trunk and streams the talkgroups as plain audio in your browser.

What sets this apart from other ways to listen to Dallas County:

Free, with no catch

No ads, no 15-second pre-roll, no paywall, and talkgroup names are visible to everyone — not locked behind a subscription.

Three streams, your choice

Law only, fire/EMS only, or everything combined — instead of one mashed-together feed. Pick the lane you actually want.

The whole picture

We show the full county radio system, including which channels are encrypted, rather than quietly leaving out what can't be carried.

Monitored locally

Operated by a licensed Iowa ham radio operator in the coverage region — actively listening, so the talkgroups stay accurate.

Coverage across Dallas County

The Dallas County Sheriff dispatches law enforcement, fire, and EMS for communities throughout the county, and that dispatch is what you hear on these streams. That includes Adel, Van Meter, Dallas Center, Woodward, Granger, De Soto, Dexter, Minburn, Redfield, Earlham, and the rural areas in between.

Waukee and Perry are the county's larger cities. Waukee police are dispatched through WESTCOM, a separate Des Moines metro system that is not carried on these streams. Perry's police coverage isn't on a dedicated talkgroup we've identified; much of the Perry area is dispatched by the Dallas County Sheriff on the channels you'll hear here. County fire and EMS serving both communities is generally on the Dallas County fire/EMS talkgroups carried on these streams. As the fast-growing western edge of the Des Moines metro, Dallas County is one of the busiest public-safety areas NCISS covers.

Dallas County scanner FAQ

Is the Dallas County scanner free?

Yes. Every NCISS stream is free — no ads, no pre-roll, no paywall, and talkgroup names are visible to everyone. Open a stream and you're listening.

What's the difference between the three streams?

Public Safety is everything combined — law, fire, and EMS. Fire & EMS carries only fire/EMS. Law Enforcement carries only law. The Public Safety stream is the all-in-one option if you're not sure.

Which communities does it cover?

The Dallas County Sheriff dispatches law, fire, and EMS countywide, and that's what's on these streams — covering Adel, Van Meter, Dallas Center, Woodward, Granger, De Soto, Dexter, Minburn, and the rural areas. Waukee police are dispatched through WESTCOM, a separate metro system not carried here. Perry's police coverage isn't on a dedicated talkgroup we've identified, though much of the Perry area is handled by the Sheriff on the channels you'll hear. County fire and EMS for these communities is generally on the talkgroups carried here.

Are any Dallas County channels encrypted?

Yes. Law 1 — the main dispatch — is clear and carried here. Several secondary law channels including Law 2, Jail Operations, and the Courthouse channel are encrypted and can't be carried by anyone. We show the full picture rather than hiding what can't be decoded.

Why does it sound different from an old scanner?

Dallas County runs on the ISICS P25 Phase II trunked network, not conventional VHF. A standard analog scanner can't follow trunked talkgroups. NCISS decodes the P25 system directly and streams it in plain audio.

How current is the audio?

Streams run 24/7 and are typically 30–60 seconds behind real time, normal for internet streaming. Not suitable for emergency response. If you need emergency services, call 911.
